Campus Disability Advocates is so excited to be hosting our third annual Disability Week from September 29th through October 3rd. Campus Disability Advocates has some great events lined up and we hope to have a great turnout.
On Monday, September 29th, we will be holding a Disability and Education Forum in the University Center, Room 227 at 7 PM. The forum will focus on the transition from secondary education to some form of post-secondary training. The panel will include representatives from the University of Tennessee’s Department of Special Education, the Office of Disability Services, Department of Rehabilitation Counseling, the Knoxville Center of the Deaf, and the Disability Law and Advocacy Center.
On Tuesday, September 30th, we will be hosting a panel entitled “Disability Stories, Questions, and Answers” in the University Center, Shiloh Room at 7 PM. Students, faculty, and community members will first provide brief monologues about life with a disability. Audience members will then be allowed to ask whatever tasteful questions about disability they have always wanted to ask but were too afraid. We have secured representatives from a wide array of disabilities to participate in the panel.
On Wednesday, October 1st, Tricia Downing, a wheelchair athlete, motivational speaker, and founder and director of a fitness camp for women in wheelchairs, will be discussing her Camp Discovery. She will discuss her reasons for founding this innovative camp, share the stories and struggles of the women who have participated, and provide examples of the adaptive recreation she uses at her camp. Her talk will be in the University Center Ballroom at 7 PM.
On Thursday, October 2nd, RJ Mitte, the actor who portrayed Walt Jr. in the hit series Breaking Bad, will present “Overcoming Adversity: Turning a Disadvantage to an Advantage.” As an actor with a disability, he will be discussing the portrayal of disability in the media. His talk will be in the University Center Auditorium at 7 PM. Tickets are $5 to the public.
On Friday, October 3rd, Campus Disability Advocates will host a Pizza and Open-Book Trivia Night at 7 PM in the International House Great Room. Participants will be allowed to use electronic devices to look up answers to trivia questions. The winning team will receive a set of prizes.
Those who attend each night of events will receive the answers to a set of bonus questions for Friday’s trivia night.
